Subtraction Cutting Technique

The Subtraction Cutting method is based on a technique of “hollow construction”, differing from garments created from flat pattern making methods, or from draping methods.
It was pioneered by fashion designer Julian Roberts. “Subtraction Cutting” uses negative spaces that can be opened up in fabric, and falls somewhere between traditional 2D pattern making and 3D draping, resulting in experimental garments that break the boundaries of the conventional garment shapes.  The resulting shape is created by removal of fabric, not addition of fabric. This removal creates space for the body, but also controls how the fabric falls around the body.
The resulting garments result in nearly zero wastage, and often look incredibly complex, unique, and one of a kind in design.

減法剪裁，是時裝設計中一個比較特殊及具有創意性的技術。基於平面與三維立體共同思考的實驗性方法，製作出獨一無二及充滿藝術性的線條，及創作出光以平面剪裁難以設計的款式。

“減法裁剪”是一種【中空】的結構方式，其開創者，是畢業於英國皇家藝術學院、擁有十余年男裝設計經驗的時裝設計師Julian Roberts。
我們都能理解幾乎所有我們所穿用的衣物，無不是“部件式”的，即由多於2片的零部件縫合而成的。於是，我們可以將這類服裝的構造理解為在做“加法”。而“減法裁剪”一改傳統的部件式、加法式的服裝結構，而采取減法——剪掉整塊面料（通常以筒狀形態出現）中的部分區域，即負形狀， 讓身體從剪去的負形狀當中穿過，在身體的配合下完成服裝造型。因此創作出來的服裝不但可以做到“零廢料”，而且款式複雜但充滿想象力，獨一無二。
